Born in Dublin in 1962, Alan Boyle’s foundation was built in the National College of Art and Design (NCAD). He went on to study graphic design and working in marketing for many years. He was a producer of the annual magazine for Ceramics Ireland. Returning to NCAD in 1995, he completed a course in ceramics under the tuition of Paul Martin.
Alan's distinctive work is a combination of his imagination, his background in graphic design and external influences, notably the ancient Irish art of the passage tombs of the Boyne Valley and Newgrange, the Irish landscape and flora, and Japanese wood block prints. Influenced by Artists Klimt, Dali, Durer and Patrick Scott.
Much of Alan's work is hand built ensuring each piece is unique. Alan's philosophy is that ceramics are as much tactile as they are visual. The concept of balance - visually and mental - is evolving in his works as he experiments with new techniques. Alan recently started creating larger outdoor work and working with new materials such as bronze. Alan welcomes commission work.
