Born in Belfast Sylvia Parkinson Browne has lived in the Kilkenny countryside for over twenty five years. Her background stems from formal art school training in London and Lancashire, predominantly as a sculptor and this came to influence her approach to two dimensional work, experimenting with surfaces and mixed media, layering, then sanding and scoring back parts of the image from beneath.
The process is continually evolving but the subject of animals has always been a major focus of her work. Sylvia's studio is surrounded by a wealth of wildlife only emerging from the background in fleeting moments, hopefully just long enough to inspire. Parkinson Browne finds creative satisfaction in portraying these beautiful creatures but it has become important to her to also acknowledge the impact of modern life to them. Recently, there has been a conscious move towards a reduced palette and the animal theme has shifted towards a more layered expression in both celebrating wildlife and confronting the darker aspects of erosion and decay in natural habitats.
Parkinson Browne has been selected by the Royal Ulster Academy for the past three years and previously was invited to exhibit in WAY (Wildlife Artist of the Year) Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Her contributions of paintings to a variety of Animal charities are legendary and her work can be found in important art collections both at home and abroad...
